Second prophet in the Mormon Church

September 7th, 2009

Brigham Young was born on June 1, 1801, in Whitingham, Vermont. According to mormon history, Brigham Young first read the Book of Mormon soon after its publication in 1830. It wasn’t until two years later that he finally converted to Mormonism. Shortly after his baptism he was called to serve in Upper Canada as a missionary. In 1844 Joseph Smith, the president of the church, was martyred in Carthage Jail by a mob. After his martyrdom in 1844, questions were raised as to who was going to be the next president of the church. During a meeting Brigham Young reminded the saints that Joseph Smith had received revelation that the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was to lead the church after his death. Mormon History indicates he sounded and looked at times like Joseph Smith during that meeting. Almost three years after Joseph Smith Jr. Martyrdom Brigham Young became his successor.
