The Eary Designs and Origin of the Legionary Battle Shield

Roman Shields are generally believed to have been designed by the earliy Greeks or Italians, although we’ll never know for certain. Historically, Roman shields were rectangle in shape and were used to protect their front sides from arrows and other unfriendly advances. However, by the 3rd Century BC they seemed to have evolved into Roman Shields that were round – at least according to the artwork of the day that has survived.Roman Shields were made of two pieces of wood that were glued together – like a thicker version of modern day plywood. The outer surfaces of Roman Shields were covered with canvas and then calf skins. The top and bottom of Roman Shields were then outfitted with a metal – usually iron – edging that protected the edges in battle or when simply placed on the ground. While in battle, a warrior would have his hand on a handle inside the shield that would facilitate rotation in order to avoid hits from other warriors.
