Online Chatting: Today’s Version of the Backyard Fence

Not long ago I pulled up a website I belong to and my home page was filled with little notes which had been posted by friends and family.  Nothing too earth shattering, just online chatting and comments about work, family, and what they will be doing this weekend.  It reminded me of how much my mother used to enjoy standing at the backyard fence with our neighbors, essentially talking about the same things.  I keep hearing about how different our lives are today and, in many ways they are.  But in all the important ways, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
