Lockboxes: Through the Times

August 14th, 2008

Some of the fundamental progress made by pin locks and lockboxes (those having number mechanisms) included increasing the number of pins for added security and shifting the orientation of the pins to allow the key to provide the unlocking force. Since using a rope to lock or open early pin locks did more harm than good in trying to secure an individual’s possessions, the principle of the modern pin tumbler lockboxes was utilized instead. Next came the warded locks (utilizes a key inserted unto a keyhole to open) – a lock device that is still widely used in recent times when the security required for a certain property is not that high and the cost limit is a significant factor for the consumer. It is the first lock design to have a key recognizable to a modern western person. Lock puzzles are another that is used to obscure the locking mechanism or even provide a nonfunctioning lock for the thief to waste time on.
