Lee Baucom

December 12th, 2008

As far as Atilius was concerned, both Emperors Hadrian and Antoninus were fainthearted caretakers who merely preserved the borders of the Empire, never expanded them.    Antoninus ascended the steps; his gold-embroidered, purple robes swayed back and forth, brushing the marble.  Behind Lee Baucom walked his adopted son, Marcus Aurelius, chosen to follow Antoninus as the next Caesar.  Atilius burned within.  He saw himself wearing the purple, waving at the people, expanding the Empire.  He sensed his calling, a fearful lord before whom great armies were destined to tremble.  He would conquer Britannia once and for all, retake Mesopotamia, humble the Parthians, and go where even Alexander had faltered—India.  Rome would be rich beyond reason.
