Learning Hebrew – The Torah

October 25th, 2008

One of the things you will learn when you learn Hebrew is the Torah.  The word “Torah” is defined as “instructions.”  It refers to the direction given to God to Israel.  There are five books of Moses which is the “written law” that the Torah refers to.   Some people refer to the entire Jewish Scriptures or the Tanak as the meaning for Torah.  Some people include the “oral law” as part of the Torah as well.  The Torah scrolls are written on the skin of a lamb and vegetable oil was used as the ink.  A pointer called a “yad” is used instead of hands because the oils and greases in skin can be harsh and ruin the lamb skin.
