Joining a frequent flyer club to gain points for future flights

After finishing my University course late last year I have decided to do some traveling this year. I am currently working in position that is short term in nature. This will allow me to save some funds to pay for the trip. I will also be working along the way to accumulate funds when they are needed. Since I will be doing a lot of travel I have also decided to join a frequent flyer club. This will allow me to accumulate a lot of points that I can redeem against future flights. I have friends that do this and it can save you money along the way.
