Chinese Accent Reduction-Speaking Smoothly

July 15th, 2008

What does singing have to do with Chinese accent reduction? When a singer sings a song, they naturally connect their words together, only pausing at appropriate places.  American English is much like this.  Americans speak by connecting their words together in phrases, stopping only at appropriate times.  Linking words together is a part of the language.   This creates smooth speech, with words that are connected.  As a native Chinese speaker, you may be stopping slightly in between words or pausing at inappropriate places.  This creates what we refer to as “choppy” speech and is different from the customary smooth American English.  Learning how to connect words together should be addressed during your accent reduction program.
