The most common type of material used on most all fireplace designs is going to be wood. Oak, mahogany, walnut and others are all popular. But, your options are not limited there.
One of the most unique materials would be marble. Not only is it strong, but also it lasts a lifetime. Of course, it comes at an expensive cost. Many people use stone as a mantel material around the fireplace. Not only does it look great, but also has a lifespan nearly equal to that of marble.
