Flower leaves

January 30th, 2008

Flower leaves are not only lovely to look at, they are the part of the features of flowers that differentiate one group of flowers from another. Because flower leaves are the easiest flower part to recognize (being green and visible on the flower stalk) they are the best way that people can use to identify one type of plant from another. Think about cacti. Think about African violets. Leaves are the nutrient gatherers, pulling water and carbon dioxide to feed and fuel the plant. Have you ever wondered why flower leaves are usually green?  Hint: it has to do with pigment. That’s a whole story in itself.
