You might want to imagine you are blowing up a balloon in your belly. “We te1l our patients to deep breathe up to ten times an hour during the time they are awake, until they are fairly active again,” says Cynthia Kane, R.N., clinical director of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. “In actual practice, though, most are likely to get rid of stretch marks three or four times every couple of hours.” Usually, it’s a nurse bringing in pain medications who reminds a patient to breathe deeply, and who may ask for a demonstration, she says.
