Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) is a small tree native to North America. The flowers, leaves, berries, bark and roots have been used in traditional folk medicine and herbal nutritional supplements for centuries, earning the elder tree the reputation of being “the medicine chest for the common people”. The berries of this tree contain high amounts of vitamins A, B and C making warm elderberry wine a folk remedy for a sore throat. Elderberry might also help benefit for pain, and to reduce inflammation of the urinary tract and bladder. The leaves and flowers are often used as an ingredient in ointments and poultices for burns, swelling and wounds. Elder flowers have been found to be a mild astringent and can be helpful in relieving eczema, acne and psoriasis. Elderberry is being studied for its possible help in recovering from the flu, coughs and even influenza.
