All about testosterone replacement therapy
March 31st, 2008
Testosterone is responsible for the secondary male sex characteristics of muscle mass, strength, bone density, fat distribution, hair patterns, voice deepening, fertility, libido, and mental, physical energy. Testosterone can also increase the levels of another anabolic hormone, IGF-1, in muscle tissue. In the testes, testosterone is produced by the Leydig cells. Testosterone is also produced by the adrenal glands in both males and females and, in small amounts, by the ovaries in females. Testosterone replacement therapy can be in the form of injections, patches (Androderm) or gel (Androgel, Testim). Testosterone replacement therapy can also improve the patient’s sense of well-being.
