A Prostate Biopsy Might Prove Inaccurate In Obese Men

September 4th, 2008

Prostate screening can indicate the possible presence of cancer, but a prostate biopsy will then need to be carried out to confirm the presence of cancer and to determine its severity. This means that biopsy results are extremely important as far as deciding upon a course of treatment is concerned. There is however a problem when it comes to interpreting biopsy results for men suffering from obesity and a recent study has shown that a significant number of biopsies for obese men were classified as indicating a low-grade cancer when in fact follow-up investigations revealed that these cancers were high-grade. As a result of this study a re-evaluation of the procedures for assessing biopsies in the case of obese men is now underway.
