Looking for ways to Pay off Bills

Over the past year I seemed to have had more bills than ever.  I lost my job and have been unable to pay for them.  I pay a couple dollars when I can, but the interest on my credit cards makes it worthless to even bother paying them anymore.  A friend told me that I should get a debt consolidation loan officer to help me with my situation.  She says that if I show the officer all the bills that are due, they can work with the companies to help reduce the amount of money that I owe.  I will have to check it out.
