How motorcycle insurance companies work

November 8th, 2008

I used to work for an insurance company. We sold Bike Insurance. We spent a lot of time learning about what kinds of people were acceptable risks. It was all pretty simple stuff. They were always looking for people that did not take a lot of risk. They also liked property that was not too expensive. (Less it burn up, crash or be stolen) When it came to motorcycle insurance. the rule was very simple: We insure only middle aged guys on middle aged bicycles. That was the long and short of it. A 42 year old guy riding a 4 year old Honda Gold Wing was perfect. No ninja’s hurricanes or other crotch rockets. No chopper,. No custom jobs. No dirt bikes with dirt bags riding on them. Oddly it seemed to me that the guys making these rules were always middle aged guys who had nice middle aged bike. Ill leave it tot he reader to decide if it was a true quest for money, or just feeling comfortable with people that “Are just like me”?
