How accurate is a background check?

It seems to me that if I am going to make sure my credit report is in order it would make sense to make sure everything in my background report would be correct too. As I continue my search for a new job I am sure that there has been a background check or two run on me. However, I don’t know what information they are getting or how accurate it is. It would be awful to think that I may not get the job I want because of mis-information. So, how do you verify if that the information that comes from your background check is correct?
