Anyone know how to use Hubpages?

I have read the website’s description as well as the descriptions of Hubpages posted on the web and am still more confused than enlightened on what this site is about. I would like to know not only how to use Hubpages but honestly what exactly you are supposed to do with them. They apparently can be used to promote websites as well as make money. I guess I am a bit slow when it comes to new technologies such as this. I did not even join Youtube until the summer of 2006, which is almost like showing up late to a party in the online world.
