Advertising is Contemporary Art

February 11th, 2009

I was talking to my husband, who works in Ann Arbor Advertising, about Advertising being contemporary art and the scale of its influence on culture. It started when we were at a local art gallery looking over some painting that were quite good. I said something to the effect that I wanted real art in my home someday—not just prints. He nodded, but then said, you know art isn’t about things hanging in halls, and homes, and museums any more—at least not modern art. I began to think about it. With the Internet, and TV, movies, etc. Where is art’s influence today? I think Joe is right. I think people are so less likely to be influenced by art on a wall and more influenced by architecture, and advertisements. But, I still want paintings in my home.
