When you’re looking for a dog to use for hunting dog training, the most important thing to think about is temperament. You don’t want a dog who is not trainable, either because it wants to make its own decisions or because it is aggressive, fearful or easily confused. You want a dog that is compliant, obedient, and intelligent. When selecting a puppy, you can do some basic tests to see what kind of personality the dog has. Basically, you want to determine whether a puppy is dominant or submissive. Rolling a puppy over on its back is a good way to see if it is dominant or submissive. A submissive puppy will get very still and be unable to make eye contact. A very dominant puppy will fight you, biting, wriggling, and trying to escape.
